I agree that this is and was a truly rare occurence. I was surprised even when it happened back in the 80's!
But music is a constantly evolving thing. People listen and love all kinds of music.
...and greatness sometimes still gets recognized...even instrumental greatness.
So much has changed, tho'...the music industry is soooo different now.
